The SWRI was established in 2014 from the merging of four research units which now constitute the Soil and Water Resources Institutes. Two of them, the Athens Soil Science and the Agricultural Engineering are located in the city of Athens, whilst the Thessaloniki Soil Science and the Land Reclamation are based in the city of Thessaloniki. Τhe administrative headquarters are based in Thermi, Thessaloniki.

SWRI is the largest specialized Institute for research on soil and water resources protection and management in Greece, characterized by a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines. Currently, its personnel consists of 21 Researchers, 21 Specialized Scientists, 21 administrative and technical personnel, and 25 research associates through contracted work in the framework of undergoing R&D and consultancy projects.

Beyond its research actions, SWRI participates in internship programs for students (ATLAS, ERASMUS, etc) and supervises dissertations, postgraduate and doctoral theses, in liaison with academic institutions of Greece and other European countries.

Principal Investigator and key members of the SWRI team

Dr. Evangelos Tziritis (M) is a senior Geologist holding a Ph.D. in environmental hydrogeochemistry with a focus on groundwater resources. He is a researcher at the Soil and Water Resources Institute of SWRI, with more than 15 years of experience in geo-environmental projects of basic and applied research in liaison with academia, stakeholders and private firms. His main research domain is focused on hydrogeochemistry but also possesses in-depth knowledge and expertise in the fields of hydrogeology, aquifer vulnerability, geoinformatics, isotope hydrology, water resources management, and environmental monitoring of water reserves. He has participated in several research projects (EU, EU/National, National) and has conducted 3 funded post-doc research projects (Greece and Germany), whilst has published more than 50 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences.

Dr. Andreas Panagopoulos (M) is a senior researcher of SWRI, with significant expertise in hydrogeology, groundwater modeling and groundwater resources management.

Dr. Vasilios Pisinaras (M) is a researcher of SWRI, with expertise in groundwater modeling, climate change impact assessment and, water resources management.

Dr. Charalampos Doulgeris (M) is a researcher of SWRI, with expertise in groundwater modeling, hydrology and water resources management.
